Ah! “Ladyhawke”, with a young Matthew Broderick, Michelle Pfeiffer, and Rutger Hauer. It’s a pretty good movie. Look for it for a viewing. I’ve not seen it in years. I’ll have to pull the DVD out this weekend. Anyhow, that’s one of my favorite scenes. As a matter of fact, the first time I watched the movie I busted a gut laughing over it because it came out of nowhere.
Yeah, it’s Lent again. However, Lent in the 21st century is a little different than when the Roman Catholic Church established the ‘sacrificing’ and ‘meatless’ ritual decree. I have read where the church had some sort of arraignment with fish marketers in order to boost their sales by forbidding meat-eating during Lent. I don’t know about that. But I do know that by today’s markets being expected to partake of fish instead of meat is not really a ‘sacrifice’. Hell, I’d eat fish several meals a week, if I could afford it. Fish is expensive in general, and the cheaper types of fish are constantly being deemed unsafe due to mercury and other pollutants. So, while I do try to revert to some fish for my family’s meals during Lent, I don’t shy away from having replaced fish with chicken years ago for meatless Fridays. Eh, as long as Spring is around the corner.

In the last few years the 1918 Spanish Influenza pandemic has been given a fresh look, with some researches concluding a percentage of the deaths could be attributed to aspirin itself. Interesting read from a 2009 report that was re-visited a year ago about how some of the Spanish Flu deaths were caused by the use of aspirin on infected patients. A couple speculations on various deficiencies caused by the drug. But recall a few decades ago during a flu outbreak they were finding children having major long-term brain/neuro ramifications and deaths due to being treated with aspirin. Reye Syndrome. That’s when people stopped giving children aspirin all together for fever. I never gave my kids/Grandkids aspirin. Anyhow, sometimes in a panicked effort to treat something it may end up making things worse. I just thought the report was pretty interesting, given the early 20th century pandemic. the Wiki entry states that “the syndrome may have first been reported in 1929”. But I’ll bet if they could gather forensic evidence (impossible, I know) they might find Reye Syndrome really was an issue during the Spanish influenza pandemic deaths and post-physical ailments before 1929.
