Congressman Steve Scalise sustained a single rifle shot to the left hip. The bullet travelled across his pelvis, fracturing bones, injuring internal organs, and causing severe bleeding. He was transported in shock to MedStar Washington Hospital Center, a Level I Trauma Center. He underwent immediate surgery, and an additional procedure to stop bleeding. He has received multiple units of blood transfusion. His condition is critical, and he will require additional operations. We will provide periodic updates.
President Trump said Thursday that House Majority Whip Steve Scalise (R-La.) is “in some trouble” following the shooting Wednesday at a GOP congressional baseball practice in Virginia.
“It’s been much more difficult than people even thought at the time,” Trump said Thursday at the start of a White House event on apprenticeship.
“He’s in some trouble, but he’s a great fighter and he’s going to be OK, we hope.”
Scalise had another surgery Thursday, his third procedure since being admitted to the hospital on Wednesday, ABC News and other outlets reported.
